Module five can be used in two different ways with intermediate to advanced levels. The videotaped conversation between Josh and Mazen can be used to introduce the types of conversations that people have in which they are practicing the skills that are necessary for people to form relationships. Their conversation is about cultural differences but is basically

concerned with a universal concept, “shame”. In the conversation, Josh and Mazen clearly describe their own and their cultures expectations about “shame” in specific behaviors. While there are differences between the two, there is also the commonality of having “shame”. Therefore, this conversation can be shown before students take the Walk through the Valley of

Values in Module Three. Or, it can be used as presented in the workbook in Module five. If the video is used completely in Module Five, the introduction to the Moduleis used first.

Focus  Activity:  The  Message  and  the  Meaning

For this level of student have them look at the pictures and guess what the people are doing. Have them find what all three pictures have that is the same.

Some examples would be that there are young people who are learning about growing up. This is a very good time to generate lists of vocabulary lists for each of the photos.

Activities:  Everybody’s  Doin’  It

In this activity, change questions to:

What are they doing?

Why are they doing that?

How do I do that?

Otherwise, simply follow the instructor suggestions for this activity.  The difficulty is more with grasping the concept and the process rather than linguistic.

An  Activity:  Revisiting the  Space  Ship

Again, in this activity, change questions to:

What are they doing?

Why are they doing that?

How do I do that?

Otherwise, simply follow the instructor suggestions for this activity.  The difficulty is more with grasping the concept and the process rather than lilnguistic.

Simply follow the instructor suggestions and this activity should present

little problem for this level of ESL student.

An  Activity:  Self  Awareness

It is suggested that with the lower to intermediate level ESL student that you model how to do this activity. Otherwise, simply follow the instructor suggestions and this activity should present little problem for this level of ESL student. At this stage of the Toolkit, even students who have done little or not self-reflection before, will be able to do this exercise.

Final  Reflection:

Even if the conversation between Josh and Mazen was used in Module Three, it can be used again here for the purpose of distinguishing the differences between universal, cultural and individual values. In addition, for the lower level ESL student, the listening practice is important.
