The Biggio Center’s Preparing Future Faculty program is a year long program which trains doctoral students at Auburn to become effective and successful faculty members at higher education institutions across the globe. The program’s cohort meets weekly for workshops and events with specific topics and skills in mind.
On January 10th, Dr. Stacey Nickson led a 2 hour presentation for the 2012-2013 PFF cohort titled “Negotiating Difference.” She introduced the students to the Culture Bump Approach, an interactive, multi-media process that includes an 8-step tool to manage any cultural difference (gender, ethnicity, age, race, socio-economic class, language, religion, etc.) on a more personal level. The process teaches participants how to connect with anyone on the planet.
The Culture Bump theory and approach were created by Dr. Carol Archer, a Biggio Center consultant. Dr. Archer has taught the approach to university audiences, Fortune 500 corporate clients, and to governments across the globe, from the United States to the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia. She has also taught all ages, from college students to primary age children.
For the past two years, the PFF curriculum has included Dr. Nickson’s Culture Bump presentation in order to prepare the cohort for careers on the global academic landscape. Students respond positively to the training, indicating their appreciation for the progressive and personal approach to negotiating differences that the Biggio Center promotes through the Culture Bump Approach.
